This discipline originated from the Chemical Industry Automatic Control program, one of the earliest of its kind established in China in 1958, and began admitting graduate students in 1962. The Industrial Automation specialty was among the first in China approved to confer doctoral degrees in 1981. Since 1995, it has been included in the national 211 Project for key discipline construction. In 2003, it was authorized to establish the first-level discipline doctoral degree program in Control Science and Engineering. In 2007, the Control Theory and Control Engineering discipline was approved as a National Key Discipline and a Shanghai Municipal Key Discipline. In 2012, it was approved as a Shanghai First-Class Construction Discipline (Category B). In 2017, Intelligent Manufacturing for Process Industries was included in the national Double First-Class initiative for discipline construction. Since 1985, this discipline has consistently held a seat on the Academic Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
The discipline has established a postdoctoral research station in Control Science and Engineering. It possesses 3 national-level research platforms (the National Technology Innovation Center for Intelligent Regulation of Process Manufacturing, the State Key Laboratory of Industrial Control Technology, and the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Low-Carbon Technology) and 9 provincial/ministerial-level research bases (including the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Process Systems Engineering, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing for Energy and Chemical Processes, the 111 Intelligent Base for Intelligent and Optimal Manufacturing in Petrochemical Industry, the Ministry of Education International Joint Laboratory for Intelligent and Optimal Manufacturing in Petrochemical Industry, the Shanghai Frontier Science Research Base for Industrial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, the Shanghai AI Laboratory Industrial Intelligence Research Center, the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center for Process Intelligence Manufacturing, the Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Manufacturing of Process Industries, and the Shanghai Aerospace and Aviation Intelligent Systems Integration and Innovation Center). This degree program adheres to the guidance of the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, upholds the fundamental task of fostering virtue and cultivating talents, and strengthens innovation-driven development. Relying on the construction of the first-class supporting discipline Intelligent Manufacturing for Process Industries, it addresses national strategies and socio-economic development needs such as Dual Carbon strategy(Carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets), the digital transformation of manufacturing, and the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region. With a focus on fundamental theoretical research and core technology development in industrial intelligence, industrial software, and intelligent cyber-physical systems, it has become a significant base for talent cultivation, scientific research, technological innovation, and achievement transformation in China's automation field.
The standard duration for the doctoral program is 3-4 years, with a maximum study period not exceeding 6 years. The validity period for course grades is 6 years starting from the student's enrollment.
Computer Science and Technology
The Computer Science and Technology discipline was established with the inception of its undergraduate program in 1985. It obtained the authority to confer the Master of Engineering degree in Computer Software and Theory in 1990, and in Computer Application Technology in 1996. In 2006, it was authorized to confer the doctoral degree in Computer Application Technology (a secondary discipline) and the master's degree in Computer Science and Technology (a first-level discipline). The discipline achieved first-level doctoral degree conferring authority in Computer Science and Technology in 2021 and established a postdoctoral research station in 2023.
The discipline boasts a strong faculty, currently comprising 15 professors and over 30 associate professors/senior engineers. For many years, it has consistently undertaken national-level research projects such as those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and National S&T Major Projects, alongside a large number of provincial/ministerial and enterprise-level R&D projects. It has developed distinctive research features and gained widespread domestic influence in areas including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Trustworthy Software and Systems, Big Data Analysis and Applications, and Large-Scale Parallel and Evolutionary Computing. The faculty has been recognized with multiple National Science and Technology Progress Awards and provincial/ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards. Emphasizing reform in educational content and methods, the discipline has undertaken numerous national and provincial/ministerial teaching reform projects, led several National-Level Elite Courses and National-Level Bilingual Demonstration Courses, and received over 10 National Teaching Achievement Awards and Shanghai Municipal Teaching Achievement Awards.
Relying on units such as the School of Information Science and Engineering, the Institute of Computer Technology, and the Information Technology Experimental Teaching Center, the Computer Science and Technology discipline provides excellent experimental conditions and a conducive working environment for cultivating advanced scientific and technical talents in the field.
The standard duration for the doctoral program is 4 years, with a maximum study period not exceeding 6 years. The validity period for course grades is 6 years starting from the student's enrollment.
